Weekly Practice

Putting the virtues into practice

If you've got this far, you may have decided to get a coin, or you may still be wondering whether it's the right tool for the job. You might see some value in it for yourself, your family, your mates or your community. You might be quite happy just carrying it on your keyring, or giving it to someone when you see them doing something worth recognising. That's fine.If you want more from it, it takes a bit of practice. Like learning anything — using tools safely, picking up a language, getting better at a skill — it comes from doing it, again and again. The simplest way I know is one small job a week.Keep it simple. Think about each one: Respect. Integrity. Stand Together. Be Kind. Be Honest. Act.

You can also reread the short descriptions of each virtue.

As I write this, mine is personal: contact one family member each week, and stop feeding old grudges. Nothing grand. Just something I can actually do, and know whether I did it.Yours might come to you straight away. If it does, write it down — in a journal, on the fridge, in your phone's reminders. If it doesn't, or you'd like a nudge, spin the coin below. It'll give you a virtue and a job to start from. Take it, change it, or write your own. You're the one choosing.

This week's job

One virtue. One small job. One week. Takes about a minute.

  • Hold your coin, close your eyes and turn it in your fingers a few times.
  • Stop. Read the word under your thumb. That's your virtue for the week.
